TEEEETSUOOOOO by FabianMonk TEEEETSUOOOOO by FabianMonk
Recently watched Akira again, that movie just does not get old.
Realized I never drew this guy before, so here's a fix to that.

Originally I wanted to make this a bigger illustration, with Tetsuo standing on a pile of rubble / his own mutated arm, but then I ended up spending way too much time on this as is, so that idea got put on hold.

Let me know what you think!

This piece inspired me to finally watch Akira making me attempt to draw Tetsuo myself, nowhere as good as this though.
Simply amazing work! The expression on his face is sick!

Recently watched it too, I was surprised that I liked it even more than the last time I saw it. I think it's sad that there hasn't been an increase in well told stories in the last years, I mean to be fair the story in Akira is decent, but it's told excellently through the medium. Meanwhile almost ALL comic & animation stories I see are literally junk in both concept & conception. Seems plenty of industries are kind of dry for real inspiration in a lot of places, or have I been missing some works perhaps?

I think I get what you mean about the narrative. That's one of the best things about Akira, the way the story unfolds. I fucking love how the movie is called Akira, and the whole time this character just gets talked about - he's got actual screen time of maybe 4 minutes or something? But just he's presence (or lack thereof, rather) resonates throughout that entire city and it's shown so well. The mood that creates is awesome.
Not to mention how all those side stories are interwoven. Fucken love it.

I'm not really sure, I'm super biased here. In terms of narrative, I remember Sword of the Stranger was nicely done in that regard as well. Also not a new story in any way, but still absolutely great.

In terms of movies in general, I also very much like Christopher Nolan's narrative style. That's kinda stuck out to me in the last couple of years. But what about you? I'm so damn mainstream I'm sure I'm missing something.

haha yeah, I remember sword of the stranger, I remember really wanting to get into it but was completely & utterly unable to. While Akira had plenty of original & engaging ideas & like you said side stories, Sword had basically nothing new whatsoever from what I remember.

I did actually just see a movie called "chicken with plums" which came out this year, by Marjane Satrapi, who made "Persepolis" from some year ago. Not sure if it was really that great or if it's just been a long time since I saw a good film, but it's certainly one of the few recent films I've enjoyed.

Other than that, I actually loved the suspense of "Inglorious basterds" hahah, say what you will about every other aspect of the film. But that was what, three years ago?
There's a bunch of older movies by Terry Gilliam like "Brazil" & Baron von munchausen, if you can get into the vibe, they can be damned enjoyable. I always hated Munchausen because it used to play on tv all the time when I was a kid here, but when I got older & could engage in the story it was in many ways great (although it undoubtably fails in capturing the sheer wonder of some of it's ideas while sometimes putting too much focus on it's more blatant gags).

Comment getting a bit long here, but it would be a disgrace not to mention the first season ever of Lupin the 3rd, of which Miyazaki of Ghibli made half the episodes. Abit shoddy quality perhaps, but unbeatable charm. Likewise Miyazakis 6 episodes of "sherlock hound".
& While I'm on a roll, read the Nausicaa manga! The whole thing! I was hard to convince in getting to reading it but you won't regret it if you do, absolutely fantastic.
