Man I had this longass description written down here and then when I tried to submit this my internet fucked up and now I'm too damn lazy to write it all again...

This is a piece done for the Aqua Leung contest over at the Satellite Soda forums. Make sure to head on over to the thread and check the other entries as well: [link]

Pencils: Chris Copeland
Colors by me, in Photoshop CS.

Aqua Leung is created by Mark Smith (of the Amazing Joy Buzzards fame) and Paul Maybury . Added bonus for me on this piece is that I needed another new painting for my portfolio which I'm putting together to apply to colleges right now. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one!

Why are you even applying to college? Seriously? You've got it all figured out, and only practice will take care of the rest. I guess college can be a good incentive to draw and paint, but that's pretty much it I think for someone of your level...

Art is all about educating the eye and self-discipline for you now.

Ah also, at college, there are girls.

Ok, go to college if you can afford it then.

Ah, I forgot: great colors as always, stronger than the drawing itself.

Well for one it's kind of a whole broadening my perspective thing. If I surround myself with people that have similar goals and ambitious, the input and influence I'll get on my work will be totally different. There are somet things I'd never even think of, and personally I think I'll learn much more much faster in a creative environment than alone at home. Also I want to buy myself some time before I rush into the job world, that shit will come soon enough anyways, no need to speed it up even further.

True enough I guess. But a studio is also a creative environment ;) And it will pay you to do stuff it asks you for (and not the other way around).

But yeah, I totally understand where you are coming from, the main thing Uni will make you do is PRACTISE. And this is precisely the key. I'm very curious to see where this will bring you!

Best of luck for your application (secretely, I'm not worried one bit hehe, I know you'll pass with flying colours!)

J.

Actually I've only sent a letter to one school yet and they haven't answered, but I expect an answer sometime this week or next. How's that quitting college / getting rich bidness working out for you?

Crossing your fingers? Good god man! I'd be shocked and amazed if any college gave a second thought to accepting you (by that I mean that they would actually accept you without a second thought). Honestly, I never looked at your profile to see your age, so I expected you to be well past the age of our average college ager, just by the caliber of your art. What college are you planning to get into?

I sent my first application letter to Kingston University in London last week and before January's up I intend to apply to at least three more colleges in the UK, allthough I haven't decided which ones yet. Thanks for the well wishes!

I have trouble believing that very many prospective college students have things like this in their application portfolio. Maybe some sort of secretive inner circle art community could be churning out artists like you, but generally speaking, you've set a pretty high bar for your competition :) Let's hope humility is a virtue that has some application in art school...

I personally blend by making lots of strokes and sampling the colors with the eyedropper tool inbetween strokes. Or I just use a very small brush and use hatching techniques.
Depends on the size of the area and the texture I want to achieve though.

nice lighting here, man. nice use of noise on this piece..very effective.
one thing though that i'm not so sure and its why i'm asking not really a critique:
should the water below show some transparency and more specular value on it even
though the light diffusses or dies out on the lower part of the scene? or it shouldn't?
Reply
:iconfabianmonk:
FabianMonk Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2007  Student Digital Artist
Logically there probably should be some more specular highlights on the water. I had them in there originally but they were distracting and pulled the focus away from the face / arm / sword triangle, so I took them out. I guess I cheated maybe, haha.

I tried imagining additional specular highlights on the water, and you're right -- it would steal the focus away. And It's not "cheating" per se..more like capitalizing on the artist's control on making it nitty-gritty perfect or making it look far better but not totally right on basic fundamentals. Hehe.

It's not realism anyways. Hehe. Hence, I've cheated most often than not in giving tweeks on my pieces. Hehe.

Anyways, neat job! :)
