Alvin Lee SF Tribute by FabianMonk Alvin Lee SF Tribute by FabianMonk
Been wanting to color this piece ever since Alvin first uploaded it to his DA account. And then he turned it into a contest, so what more motivation does one need!
Anyway here's me throwing my hat into the ring. And I don't wear hats. And I don't know what else to write. But I wish everyone who entered the best!

Line Art: Alvin Lee :iconalvinlee:
Colors by me.

Photoshop CS4.

I would suggest hitting up Alvin himself! He's got a DA page too and I know he sells these at conventions, so that's probably your only shot!

I like how the white underneath Chun Li separates everything in the picture. The balance is subtle but strong. I love that. Good job! :)

Your linework is so thin and detailed, and your coloring skills are phenomenal. How you achieve this I'll never know

Observe nature, dude. I mean sure, there's technically also the hurdle of getting a handle on the program, but honestly there's not that much you need to know about Photoshop if you just know the basics of painting / drawing.
If you observe real life, how light behaves, how shadows are cast, what makes different surface structures break light the way they do, how colors are perceived and how they affect other colors around them, etc. etc., then coloring becomes pretty easy actually. And damn fun! It takes time, it takes dedication, and you have to use your brain. You have to analyze, and break things down, and you won't necessarily succeed right away, but once you do it's incredibly rewarding. The old masters did it, it's the most tried and tested way. People often think there's a shortcut to this, but in my opinion that's somewhat short sighted. Also, the program isn't going to do the work for you. You still have to establish the color palettes on your own, choose a mood, a composition, everything that makes an illustration work.
Honestly, ultimately you have to teach yourself anyway. I mean, you can have someone tell you about every theory in the world, and that's surely not a bad thing, but when it comes to the actual practice, YOU'RE the one that has to pick up the pencil/brush/wacom stylus and do it by yourself.

That would be my advice anyway, or rather, the advice that was given to me. Other people might disagree. But I'm 22 myself and it's served me pretty well so far. :]

thank you for the wise words :)
i really appreciate them and i can clearly see that you are as passionate about color as i am n its really nice too see. i use pro markers a lot and im ok with em don't know if you've seen my graffiti faces but you cant get the detail and realism as you can on photo shop. i know the basic color on photo shop but your right i have to look at nature more and the way it naturally adapts to the environment im in. ill defiantly take your advise and put it into practice and once again thank you for your advise

Hey, LOVE your coloring!!! What kinda brush did you use??

PS
I know this is a minor thing but, did you mean to intentionally color the space in Elena's boob white? I just thought she had a bra-like thing not a full top;)

Oh hey, sorry for the super late reply!
I used some random custom brush that looks a tiny bit like a paintbrush. There's loads of them all over the net.
Thanks!

Oh and yeah no I didn't do that intentionally, that's a slip up. Keen eye!

you have made a mighty selection of tones and ambient colours.
Congratulations on the work

I would be curious as to where you got those textures

Hi! Thanks for the nice words!
In thise case I only used one texture overlay, and it was a scan of a large piece of paper that I went to town on with oil colors.
