Warning: full view is pretty damn full alright.

So! This should provide more than an ample fix of my face if there ever was need for any.

This is a project for Uni. Our task was to create a self portrait in film format, roughly 30 seconds long. My idea was to simply draw an actual self portrait for every year of my life and then cut that into a short film, leaving each image on the screen for about one and a half seconds.
About half way into this I realized that it's a totally ineffective use of the medium film and I should have probably gone with something I haven't done before, maybe using an actual camera even. Oh well too late for that. Live and learn (to think ahead).

Most of these are fucked up in one way or another but I wanted to get this done by today so I had to rush myself. These are all really a mix of traditional and digital media (Photoshop). I wanted to try out some different styles, some of which worked, some of which didn't (in my opinion). Obviously, photographic reference was used for each of these.

I don't think I could pull off so many styles at once. It's also fun to see how you've grown. :)

Wow, each portrait is so unique from the others. Considering the number of portraits you did, that is truly amazing! I love how the piece as a whole shows exploration and experimentation. Great work on this!

Hey, this is truly amazing.
I have to get something nice for Mum, for her birthday soon, and I saw this and I thought "Why didn't I think of that?!"
So, I was just after some instructions on how the hell you did some of these. I have CS3 so I'm all set on the materials and such.
Just some guidance, yeah? Would you be able to?
FabianMonk Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2008  Student Digital Artist
Well, the most important part is gathering reference. I enlisted my parents' help on this one, asking them for a photo of me of every year of my life.
Once you got those, you're all set. Start drawing.

If you were looking for technical advice, you're going to have to ask more specific question than that. :]
reALItary Featured By Owner Dec 9, 2008
You drew by hand first? Or on photoshop, with the pen tool using the scanned photos?
FabianMonk Featured By Owner Dec 9, 2008  Student Digital Artist
No I drew each one by hand first. Then I scanned them in and started coloring them in Photoshop. Except for the last one, that one is painted directly in PS. And I think it shows, too, it's one of the weaker ones in my opinion. I don't know why, but I totally never get the faces right if I start in PS from the get go. Oddly enough this is just for drawing from ref. I gotta start that on paper for some reason...
